2021-22 National Mathematics Day

REPORT OF NATIONAL MATHEMATICS DAY (21-22 December, 2021) On Dec 21st, The Department of Mathematics, J.C. Bose University of Science and Technology, YMCA, Faridabad, Haryana organised the National level competition for Poster Making, Debate Competition, PPT Presentation, Rangoli making as well as an expert talk, sponsored by Haryana State Council for Science, Innovation and Technology to Commemorate 134rd Birth Anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan on National Mathematics Day. In Poster Making competition, there were 25 participants from various Universities and colleges. The participants were from Maharshi Dayanand University (Rohtak), Hindu College (DU), J.C. Bose University of Science and Technology, YMCA (Faridabad). There were 17 participants from undergraduate courses and 08 participants from post graduate courses. There were 4 themes given to the participants for Poster Presentation that includes: 1) Mathematics in Nature 2) An eminent Indian Mathematician 3) History and development of Mathematics 4) Symmetry: A Mystery Each participant had to present their poster in the time period of 3 min. only. The judges and coordinators of the competition were: Judges and Teacher’s coordinator for the event 1) Dr. Reena Garg 2) Dr. Shashi Sharma Student Coordinators: 1) Mr. Rohit Singla 2) Miss Reshu Tiwari 3) Miss Anjali Taneja The results were announced by the judges on the basis of the criteria: 1) Originality 2) Artistic composition 3) Relevance to theme 4) Creativity 5) Presentation of the poster The winners of the competition were: 1) Yogita Yadav, a student of M.Sc. Mathematics from Hindu College (University of Delhi) got first position. 2) Divya Babbar and Simran of M. Sc Mathematics (3rd sem) from J.C. Bose University of Science and Technology, YMCA, Faridabad got second position. 3) Shivam Sharma (B. tech 1st sem) from JC Bose University of Science and Technology and Prachi (M. Sc Mathematics 5 years Integrated Course, 5th Sem) from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak got third position. The first winner got cash prize of Rs. 3000 and E-certificate. The second winner got cash prize of Rs. 1000 each and E-certificate. The third winner got cash prize of Rs. 500 each and E-certificate. All the participants got participation certificate as well. In the debate competition, nearly 50 participants have registered from different branches of J C Bose University including B. Tech, B. Sc and M. Sc, DU, MDU and Jamia Millia Islamia University of which 24 has joined the competition. The themes for the competition are: 1. Is Mathematics invented or discovered? 2. Does Mathematics reveal reality? 3. Should laptop be allowed in classroom? The participants need to speak either in support or in against of their chosen topic within a time limit of 3-5 minutes. They can present their topic either in Hindi or in English, though all of them opted for English. The judges for the event are 1. Dr. Arpita Chatterjee 2. Dr. Pooja Gupta and the student coordinator is Ms. Muskan The results are declared on the basis of the following criteria: 1. Use of arguments 2. Presentation style The winners for the competition are: • 1st Prize: Hardik Mehta (B.Tech CE, JCBUST) • 2nd Prize: Khushi Gupta (B.Tech CE, JCBUST) and Mansi (B.Tech Robotics, JCBUST) • 3rd Prize: Mohit Tanwar (M.Sc. Mathematics, DU) In Power Point Presentation Competition, there were 43 participants from various Universities and colleges. The participants were from Maharshi Dayanand University (Rohtak), Hindu Girls college (Sonipat), J.C. Bose University of Science and Technology, YMCA (Faridabad), Govt. College Matanhail (Jhajjar) , and Saraswati Mahila Mahavidyalya. Participants were of both from under graduation and post-graduation. There were 4 themes provided to the participants for the same that includes: 1). Mathematics for a better world 2). Mathematics and Ancient History 3). Mathematics: A language of universe 4). World without Zero Each participant had to present their PPT in the time period of 8-10 minutes only. The results were announced by the judges on the basis of the following criteria: 1). Originality 2). Creativity 3). Organization of content 4). Oral presentation 5). Clarity 6). Artwork 7). Animations The winners of the competition were: 1st Position - Ms. Swati Singh and Ms. Shrishti Bhardwaj 2nd Position- Ms. Kumkum and Ms. Divya 3rd Position- Mr. Lokesh Kaushik Coordinator – Mr. Abhishek and Co-coordinator – Mr. Kuldeep Singh In the Rangoli competition, seven themes namely Calculus, Group theory, Mathematical/Geometrical Shapes, Graph Theory ,Number Theory, An Eminent Mathematician, Application of Mathematics in our daily life. Fourteen teams from different departments of our university participated in this event and draw their rangoli’s according to these themes. Aanchal and urvashi from B.Sc Animation secured First position Lavi(B.Sc Physics), sunita(B.sc Chemistry) and Mohit and jitesh from B.Sc Animation secured Second position. Anjali and Khushboo from B.sc Chemistry secured Third position. In the expert talk on 22nd December, 2021, the Department of Mathematics has invited two eminent mathematicians for their lectures. Prof. H.C. Taneja started his talk by recalling the glorious history of Indian Mathematicians. He discussed various results of one of the greatest Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. He discussed the invention of the concept of zero by Aryabhatta. In his lecture, he discussed various applications of mathematics in day to day life. Mathematics is everywhere around us. He discussed applications in car designing, data analysis and management consultancy. In the second talk, Prof. Pankaj Gupta delivered a talk on the concept of Linear Programming. He illustrated the use of various techniques such as simplex method to solve the linear programming problems. Examples of minimization and maximization problems were taken to elaborate the application of the method. He demonstrated various applications of linear programming.
