2020-21 A Two Week Value Added Course on “An Introduction Course in LaTex for Scientific Writing” IC

First Week Day1_Lecture In the very first day of the course, there are two consecutive lectures by the eminent speaker Dr. Ajay Kumar Jena, Assistant Professor from School of Computer Engineering, KIIT Bhubaneswar. In session 1, Ajay sir has given an overview on LaTex. He has talked about the brief history and different uses of Latex. In the next session, he has practically explained how to make a basic document using Latex. The participants have enjoyed a lot the hands-on practise session with him. Each session is followed by an interactive question/answer session with the participants. Day2_Lecture In the second day of the course, there are two consecutive lectures by the eminent speaker Dr. Amrith Bhide, Assistant Professor from Department of Physics, NIT Puducherry, Karaikal. In session 1 and 2, Amrith sir has explained very well the basic rules for an eye catching scientific writing. He has also explained the key points for a good oral presentation. Day3_Lecture In the third day of the workshop, the first lecture is conducted by Dr. Shamma Anwar, Assistant Professor in Department of Computer Science and Engineering, BITS Mesra. In her lectures, she told about installing MikTex software and explained different LaTex file types. In the second lecture of the day, Dr. Amit Srivastava, Associate Professor in Department of Mathematics, JIIT Noida has described how we can write different mathematical symbols in LaTex. He has also explained how we can make different types of tables in LaTex. Day4_Lecture In the 4th day of workshop, Dr. Shamama has continued her lecture, she has told about different ways to add references in a LaTex file. She has explained how we can add references directly from Google Scholar list in LaTex file. She has also told to make resume using LaTex. Then in the next lecture Dr. Amit Srivastava has taught the participants to make tables using Latex. He has also explained how we can add colours in different cells of tables in a LaTex file. Day5_Lecture In the day five, the first lecture was conducted by Dr. Shamma. In her lecture she has explained class files of many important journals like IEEE, Springer, Elsevier etc. She has told how an already written manuscript can be changed according to the specific format of a particular journal. The second lecture of the day is conducted by Dr. Lakhveer Kaur, Assistant Professor of Department of Mathematics, JIIT Noida. In her lecture she explained how can we write text in italic form, how we can underline text etc. She has also taught the participants to make a simple Latex file practically. Day6_Lecture In the day six, the first lecture is conducted by Dr. Shamma. In her lecture she has explained how we can set question paper having multiple choice questions using Latex. She has also explained different ways of writing MCQ using LaTex. Then she has told about adding marks of a question in the paper in the Latex file. In the second Lecture of the day by Dr. Lakhveer Kaur has described how to write different mathematical terminology like fraction, integration, differentiation in Latex. Second Week Day7_Lecture In the two lectures of the seventh day, Dr. Sachin Kumar, Assistant professor in Department of Mathematics of Central University of Punjab, has told about use of bibtex file in LaTex. He has explained how we can we add references in a research paper using this bibtex file. He has taught to make the use of different software like jabref for citing and managing references in a research paper. Day8_Lecture In the second day of his lecture, Dr. Sachin Kumar has explained how to create references according to the format of different journals from a single bibtex file. He also gave an introduction for preparing presentation by using beamer class file. He explained different types of themes which we can use for making beamer presentation. Day9 and 10_Lectures In the ninth and tenth day of the workshop, Dr. Lakhveer Kaur from JIIT was the speaker. In her session, Dr. Kaur has supplied coding for typesetting complex mathematical formulas, different types of tables etc. The participants enjoyed the hands-on practise with her a lot. She also explained the basic rules for formatting text in Latex document. Day11_Lecture In the second last day of the event, Dr. Neha Singhal from JIIT Noida has told about enumeration explicitly. She described different types of numbered and unnumbered bullet items. Dr. Neha has also told about the process of generating index within a Latex file.
