2021-2022 A Two Day Workshop on “Applications of Mathematics”

August 09-10, 2021 Department of Mathematics, J. C. Bose university of Science and Technology, YMCA, Faridabad organizes an online two day workshop on “Applications of Mathematics”. The workshop is held during 9th-10th August 2021. This workshop is being sponsored by Haryana State Council of Science, Innovation and Technology. The purpose of this two-day workshop is to discuss various applications of mathematics and to achieve theoretical knowledge and practical applications of mathematics in related fields. The participants can expand their mental horizon from these two days of learning. More than 150 participants from different branches of the University and different parts of the country have registered for the workshop. The workshop is specially intended for UG/PG students, research scholars and faculty members of Mathematics. The topics to be discussed on the workshop are • Calculus of Variations: Practical Problems. • Modelling, differential equation and its engineering application • Relevance of the work of Ramanujan in the modern world • Curve Fitting: Least Squares Fit to Polynomial On the occasion, Prof. Neetu Gupta, who is the Chairperson of the Department of Mathematics as well as the head of the Women Cell of the university, has given a brief introduction about this Two-Day Workshop on “Applications of Mathematics. She also discussed about the current strengths and achievements of the department. She mentioned eminent faculty members from renowned institutes like IIT Roorkee, IIT Ropar, Punjab University and North cap University are the speakers for this Workshop. Their expertise would really benefit students as well as faculty members. Prof. Sandeep Grover, Dean Quality assurance and Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering of the university formally welcomed the chief guest of the program, Prof Kusum Deep and the very first speaker Prof. Sushil Tomar. Sir has congratulated Department of Mathematics for successfully organising these type of workshops in a regular manner. The Chief Guest for the program is Prof. Kusum Deep from IIT Roorkee. She is a noted mathematician. Her research areas include Operations Research, Design of Nature Inspired by Optimization Techniques, Numerical Optimization, Evolutionary Algorithms and Soft Computing. She holds more than 30 years of experience in teaching, research and administration. She is visiting Professor in various universities in UK and Australia. Prof. Kusum Deep has published more than 200 papers in various journals of international repute and conference proceedings. She has authored several books and chapters in books. She has guided more than 25 Ph.D. students. Madam has shared her experience from her postdoc days. She also explained about the cultural background of India in Mathematics, the treasures of Mathematics from Vedas and applications of Mathematics in nature, in daily life applications like online transaction, She said that Mathematics is everywhere like mathematical modelling in washing clothes, neuron network in burning from a candle, optimization in breaking of a still rod, analytical formulas and least square method in travel time of earthquake waves etc. After that, Chairperson of the Department gives a vote of thanks on the behalf of university. Prof. S. K. Tomar, the Honorary Director, UGC-Human Resource Development Center, Panjab University, Chandigarh as well as the Dean of Students Welfare, Panjab University was the very first speaker of the workshop. In the second lecture of the day, Dr Subash Chandra Martha, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics IIT Ropar delivered a lecture on modelling, differential equation and its engineering application. On the 2nd day (August 10, 2021) of the workshop, there are three expert talks. Prof. Ashish Arora, Chairperson Department of Mathematics from IKG Punjab Technical university, Jalandhar was the first speaker. He delivered the lecture on relevance of the work of Ramanujan, the great mathematician in the context of modern work. He discussed the journey of Ramanujan. Prof. Arora also discussed various theories and problems solved by Ramanujan. Dr. Ameeya Kumar Nayak, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics from IIT Roorkee, Roorkee was the second speaker of the 2nd day of the workshop. Dr. Nayak delivered the lecture on Curve Fitting: Least Squares Fit to Polynomial. Prof. C.B. Gupta, Professor, Department of Mathematics from NorthCap University, Gurugram was the third speaker of the 2nd day of the workshop. Dr. Gupta delivered the lecture on “Why study Mathematics?”. He introduced students about the beauty of mathematics. He encouraged students for higher studies in mathematics. He also discussed the various benefits of studying mathematics. After that, Dr. Reena Garg, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics of J.C. Bose university of Science and Technology. YMCA Faridabad gave a vote of thanks to the speakers and the participants on behalf of the university and Department of Mathematics. She also mentioned the hard work of Coordinators and the Organising committee of the workshop in her vote of thanks.
